Adessium Foundation to continue supporting Rewilding Europe

February 1, 2017

We are thrilled to announce that Adessium Foundation will continue to support Rewilding Europe for another three year period. This support will not only focus on our rewilding activities in the Velebit Mountains (Croatia) and the Central Apennines (Italy), but also on the identification of new areas for rewilding.

In June 2015, the Adessium Foundation visited Štirovača old-growth forest in the Velebit Mountains, together with the Rewilding Europe and Rewilding Velebit teams.

Adessium Foundation has been instrumental in the development of Rewilding Europe, providing support since the start of the initiative. This support initially focused on the general development of Rewilding Europe, with a particular focus on establishing Rewilding Europe Capital, Europe’s first rewilding enterprise funding facility.

Since 2014 the foundation’s support has switched focus to the Velebit Mountains, underpinning strong progress in this Croatian rewilding area. The development of natural grazing in Lika Plains, the research and protection of old-growth forests, the support of wildlife comeback (brown bear, red deer, Balkan chamois and others), successful communications outreach and the establishment of Rewilding Velebit as a local legal entity with its own local board have all been key achievements. Thanks to Adessium, the initiative is now well-developed, with a burgeoning reputation in Croatia and farther afield.

Building on this scaling up work undertaken in the Velebit Mountains, the next three years will see support from the Adessium Foundation shift towards the development of wildlife corridors in the Central Apennines (Italy), and the identification of potential locations for new rewilding initiatives across Northwest Europe.

— “Over the last five years, we’ve seen Rewilding Europe develop into one of the preeminent conservation organizations in Europe,” says Rogier van der Weerd, Programme Director of Adessium. “We are proud to continue our support of their work, helping secure space for wildlife, wild nature and flourishing natural processes across Europe, and helping to generate associated nature-based economic activity.”

— “We are thrilled with Adessium Foundation’s decision to continue their highly valued support,” says Frans Schepers, Managing Director of Rewilding Europe. “It will greatly help us to continue our operations in Croatia and develop the initiative further.”
