Jordi Sargatal i Vicens is zoologist and has worked since 1972 on nature conservation and research, focussing on birds, wetlands and land management. In 1982 he founded the “Servei de Control de Mosquits de la Badia de Roses i Baix Ter”, a new environmental integrated service to control mosquitos in a wetland area. He was director of “Aiguamolls de l’ Empordà” Nature Park during 14 years (1984–1998). Between 1998 and 2009 he was director of “Fundació Territori i Paisatge” (Territory and Landscape Foundation), an entity dedicated to the acquisition of high nature value land and other endangered species’ conservation projects.
Presently, Jordi is General Director of “Grup Mascort”, dedicated to sustainable tourism and natural and cultural heritage management. He has published numerous articles and books, and he has been co-editor of the “Handbook of the Birds of the World”, with 17 volumes on the 10,000 bird species of the world. He has been president of ICHN (Institució Catalana d’Història Natural), IAEDEN (Institució Altempordanesa per a la Defensa i Estudi de la Natura) and presently is president of APNAE (Friends of Aiguamolls de l’ Empordà Nature Park) and board member of SEO/Birdlife, the Club of Rome and “Consell del Premi Margalef”. Since May 2015 he is member of the Advice Council designing the new Environmental Protection Agency of Catalonia.
